Belgian-born violinist and conductor Jules Charles Pennequin made his career in France, first in Paris and then in the southwest.
In Paris, he was, among other things, first violinist at the Opéra Comique (f1894-1898).
He was later director of the Conservatoire de Bordeaux.
His methods for the violin were adopted by the principal conservatories.
